Current Projects
Here is a non-exhaustive list of the projects currently underway in Baie-Comeau’s IP zone.
Qc Rail Project
The Qc Rail project is investigating the possibility of building a 370-kilometre stretch of railroad between the existing network at Dolbeau-Mistassini and the deep-water port terminal at Baie-Comeau. This would provide Canadian companies with a new, seamless northern transportation route to world markets.
The consortium consisting of SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. and Norda Stelo Inc. is conducting the technical and economic feasibility study.
Study cost: $15M
Repair of terminal n° 5 at the Port of Baie-Comeau
The Baie-Comeau Port Management Corporation is undertaking a major repair project for terminal n° 5. This includes demolishing and rebuilding the wharf, dredging, and restructuring the parking lot and access roads.
The planned repairs will increase the port’s capacity to accommodate more cargo vessels, as well as enhance the port’s intermodal capabilities. The terminal will be mainly dedicated to bulk cargo.
Estimated project cost: $41M
Conversion of the paper mill site
The Resolute Forest Products paper mill site, now owned by Paper Excellence, is an ideal location to create an industrial hub centred on metallurgy and green energies, given its access to the port of Baie-Comeau, the railroad, and several storage facilities.
The City of Baie-Comeau can facilitate the redevelopment of the site by providing rail access directly to the facility and warehouses.
Key project figures:
- Brownfield paper mill site: 1,200,000 m2
- Land: + 7,000,000 m2
- Two electrical substations
- Four 69,000-volt power distribution lines
- Effluent treatment system
- Process water supply capacity
- Storage and production buildings
- Bulk storage
- Steam generation:
- One biomass boiler
- Two oil-fired boilers
- One electric boiler
